Tumblr and Twitter Beating Out Facebook?tumblr

If you are a parent or a company that markets to teens, you know that the teen dollar means big business. They often have their own money, and more often than not, spend whatever they have. They have turned video gaming, boy bands, vampires and energy drinks into big, big business. So, you promote your business to teens on Facebook, right? Maybe not the best choice, says a recent survey. As I reported here recently, Tumblr takes the cake with the teen set. A recent post on Webpronews.com noted,

“The survey broke respondents up into two groups – those aged 13 to 18 and those aged 19-25. Both groups reported higher use on Tumblr than on Facebook. Combined, 54% of the 1,038 respondents said they used Facebook regularly. The survey defined regularly as “several hours a week or more.” But edging Facebook out by a small bored-with-facebook-try-these-3-great-alterna-L-WpzlkZmargin was Tumblr, which registered 59% use with those aged 13 to 25.”

As Tumblr and Twitter move forward, beating out Facebook by a slim but growing margin, businesses need to figure out how to use Twitter, and to some degree, Tumblr. (Though any Tumblr user worth their salt will tell you that ads are not welcome there. Yet.) Twitter is pretty easy, and most tech savvy businesses are finding new ways to leverage the platform. But, keep “mobile” in mind as Twitter usage is becoming less and less a desktop activity and more and more a platform used with mobile devices.

Facebook and Small Business

Small business owners are becoming more and more tech savy. They have to, it is the world we live in. With an increase in technology comes an increased use of Web and social media marketing. Facebook is the first platform small businesses think of when they want to promote their business easily, cheaply and with a great reach.fb-small-biz

Over the last year or so Facebook has been rolling out tools and techniques for business, both big and small. But they have focused in on small business in their small business program:

“Facebook has teamed up with the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce in an effort it claims will help grow American small businesses and create jobs. Starting in January 2012, Facebook will give businesses up to $10 million in free Facebook advertising in the form of ad credits. The goal is to provide 200,000 businesses in the U.S. with a $50 boost.”

This push is working, 15 million small businesses now have Facebook pages. Small biz owners are finding and using Facebook’s analytics tools and really taking advantage of what this particular site can do for their business. This of course comes at a price, albeit, a relatively small one, which when you are looking at 15 million small business owners, will create quite a healthy bottom line for Facebook.

Are you using Faceook, Twitter or Tumblr to promote your small business?
